Question 1

How much does underwater boat hull cleaning cost in Florida?

Accepted Answer

Routine recurring underwater boat hull cleaning in Florida costs between $3.00 and $5.50 per foot of overall vessel length (LOA). For a standard 32-foot center console or cruiser, monthly cleaning costs between $96 and $176. Severe hard barnacle cleanouts that have been neglected for more than six months range from $6.00 to $9.50 per foot. Catamarans and multi-hulls are priced at $4.50 to $7.00 per foot.

Question 2

How often should a boat bottom be cleaned by a scuba diver in Florida?

Accepted Answer

In Florida waters, boat bottoms should be cleaned every 2 to 3 weeks during summer (May through October) when warm water temperatures (82°F to 90°F) accelerate rapid barnacle and tubeworm adhesion. During cooler winter months (November through April), a 4-week cleaning schedule is recommended to preserve antifouling bottom paint and maintain cruising speed.

Question 3

When should sacrificial zinc anodes be replaced on boats in Florida?

Accepted Answer

Sacrificial zinc anodes on shafts, rudders, trim tabs, and thrusters must be replaced when they erode to 50% of their original mass. In active Florida saltwater marinas with shore power connections, this typically occurs every 3 to 6 months. Failure to replace zinc anodes results in rapid electrolytic corrosion and permanent damage to bronze propellers and stainless steel shafts.

Question 4

Why is regular propeller and running gear cleaning critical for Florida boat owners?

Accepted Answer

Barnacles and tubeworms on propellers disrupt hydrodynamic laminar water flow, causing severe cavitation burns, engine strain, and up to 32% loss in fuel efficiency. Regular underwater propeller burnishing by certified divers restores 3 to 7 knots of cruising speed, reduces transmission vibration, and protects costly shaft seals from premature failure.
